Choosing the right size of bed is important. As a general guideline, choose a bed that is about 10 cm longer than the person who is going to sleep in it and wide enough so that each person sleeping in the bed has ample room to lie comfortably without disturbing the other partner.
Beds are manufactured in both metric and imperial measurements. Unfortunately bases and mattresses, imperial and metric cannot be mixed. Many beds manufactured in Ireland and Britain are made to imperial measure. Metric beds tend to be smaller than their imperial equivalent.
Bedsteads sold in Ireland are mainly imperial. Thus great care is required to ensure that bases and mattresses are the same size and that the proper mattress is chosen for a bedstead.
It is also noteworthy that if the slats on a bedstead are in excess of three inches, that a pocket sprung mattress is not suitable to be laid on such a slatted base.
